Nepal. June 20. 48-year-old Sarah Walton is assisted by transgender Nepalese in preparation for her marriage to 41-year-old Courtney Mitchell, at the Dakchinkali temple near Katmandu.

The marriage of Walton and Mitchell, both Denver residents, is believed to be the first public lesbian wedding ceremony in Nepal.

In May, Nepal became the first country to recognize transgender individuals in their census by adding a third gender category.
